Norway in Winter – Under the Northern Lights

Norway in Winter – Under the Northern Lights

Trip Overview

Trip Length: 8 Days
Price Point: From $3,969
Seasons Available: Winter

Winter transforms Arctic Norway into something almost unreal: snow-covered peaks rising straight from the sea, quiet fishing villages, deep fjords wrapped in blue light, and long polar nights illuminated by the Northern Lights.

This expedition aboard MS Spitsbergen explores Northern Norway beyond the classic coastal route, combining flexibility, small-ship access, and immersive experiences across the Lyngen Alps, Senja, Lofoten, and Vesterålen. Guided by the Expedition Team and shaped by weather, wildlife, and conditions, each day evolves in real time.

Expect nature landings, snowshoe hikes, winter kayaking, Zodiac cruising, whale spotting, and cultural encounters that bring you closer to life above the Arctic Circle. Exclusive HX experiences — from beach bonfires under the stars to Nordic sauna rituals and a private dinner inside the historic MS Finnmarken — add another layer to this deeply atmospheric journey through Norway’s wild north.

Day to Day Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Tromsø

Arrive in Tromsø, known as the “Gateway to the Arctic,” and board MS Spitsbergen. Surrounded by snowy mountains and Arctic history, this lively city was once the launch point for legendary polar expeditions. Time permitting, visit the Polar Museum or the iconic Arctic Cathedral before embarkation.
  • Day 2 – Lyngen Fjord & Lyngen Alps

Sail into the dramatic landscapes of the Lyngen region, where sharp peaks rise above long fjords. Activities may include nature landings, snowshoe hikes, kayaking, small-boat cruising, and whale watching. End the day gathered around a beach bonfire during the Day to Dusk – Flames and Flavors experience.
  • Day 3 – Senja

Explore Senja, Norway’s second-largest island and often called “Norway in miniature.” Discover rugged mountains, dark forests, fishing villages, sandy beaches, and roaming reindeer. Visit the historic settlement of Tranøy and learn about Arctic life, local traditions, and Viking heritage.
  • Day 4 – Toward Lofoten

Continue toward the Lofoten archipelago, searching for ideal landing sites and sheltered beaches. Venture out by Zodiac or kayak among remote islands before sailing beneath Lofoten’s iconic mountain walls, keeping watch for sea eagles overhead.
  • Day 5 – Lofoten Islands

Spend the day exploring snow-covered villages, narrow fjords, and the cultural traditions that shaped Lofoten’s fishing heritage. Visit local communities including Svolvær and enjoy time ashore. Later, embrace a classic Nordic ritual with a sauna session followed by an optional polar plunge.
  • Day 6 – Vesterålen

Navigate toward Vesterålen, where the route remains flexible according to weather and wildlife conditions. Possible highlights include Trollfjord, Raftsundet Strait, steep mountain walls, and dramatic fjord scenery. In the evening, enjoy the exclusive Into the Night – Dinner at the Museum experience aboard the preserved MS Finnmarken.
  • Day 7 – Toward Tromsø

Begin the return journey through sheltered fjords and island passages. Continue expedition activities with Zodiac excursions, nature walks, and wildlife watching, including opportunities to spot whales. Onboard lectures and science sessions offer deeper insight into Arctic ecosystems and exploration history.
  • Day 8 – Tromsø

Disembark in Tromsø. Spend additional time exploring the city or simply reflect on a week of winter exploration among fjords, islands, Arctic wildlife, and the quiet beauty of Northern Norway.
