About Baja California

The Sea of Cortez is home to 31 marine mammals, several types of turtles, and 500 species of fish. Among all this diversity, whales arrive like a visitation. Paddle up close in a kayak and fully experience how we are all connected in nature. Gray whales migrate from Alaska to gather in these turquoise waters to breed and nurse their calves. Ooh and ahh with your fellow explorers at the antics of humpback whales as they spy hop, flipper-slap, tail-lob, and breach. Baja is also one of the likeliest places on the planet to see blue whales, which are ironically elusive being the world’s largest creature. Everyone becomes a birder watching pelicans, frigate birds, and plentiful shorebirds. Hike up arid and fragrant desert arroyos among 120 species of cactus, including the giant cardon cactus, the emblem of this peninsula. Take time for a siesta in the shade of a palm tree. Rejoin your family for fresh ceviche and swap stories of the day’s wonders. Fall asleep smiling in the comfort of your cabin, savoring every moment of your Baja adventure.

Among the Great Whales

Gray whales, humpback whales, and even blue whales converge off the shores of Baja, and on this voyage you’ll have the chance to commune with them all. Jaques Cousteau called the Sea of Cortez the “world’s aquarium” and you can kayak with the gray whales who migrate here to birth their young. Over the course of eight adventure-packed days, you’ll sail on the 100-passenger National Geographic Venture around Land’s End of the Baja Peninsula to experience the rich marine wildlife in both the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean.
