A Remarkable Journey to Alaska, British Columbia, and Haida Gwaii

Expedition Ship National Geographic Sea Bird

View These Trips

The glaciers and Great Bear Forest are magnificant and the whales performed on cue. At the same time, the fairly indepth exposure to the native peoples of this part of Alaska and British Columbia was excellent. I could not rank these two aspect of the trip as they both had great value. ExpeditionTrips had excellent communications regarding the trip and planning and, particularly, the document managment supporting the trip. Typical level of service from Lindblad tour operator; that is to say excellent.

Everything on this trip was exceptional: the calving of the glaciers, seeing 10 humpback whales swimming around us, the bear eating salmon, the many sea otters floating by, the shy harbor seals, the loud sea lions, the bald eagles. The naturalists were knowledgeable, personal and fun. The staff and everyone else was in it with their heart.

Glacier Bay was simply stunning and was made even better by a bear spending an hour walking along the shore and showing off! The water teamed with birdlife. The sound of glaciers calving was an important reminder about their potential loss. Nature, water sports, and delightful food and drink only enhanced this memorable voyage.

Wild Alaska Escape

Expedition Ship National Geographic Sea Bird

View These Trips

The Wild Alaska adventure exceeded my expectations! Not only did we encounter wildlife daily - humpback whales, a large pod of orcas, multiple brown bear sightings, seals with pups, sea otters, and eagles galore - but we had ample opportunities to get out and explore with naturalists as our guides. Hiking, kayaking and even the opportunity to swim amidst icebergs! There are plenty of options...or enjoy the magnificent wildlife and scenery from the comfort of the ship. The naturalists and your photo expert shared their knowledge both onboard with presentations and while leading expeditions in the field. All were personable and intent on making the trip special for each guest. The crew, from Captain to deck hands and the amazing kitchen staff were all outstanding. We were well cared for and definitely well fed! Since I typically plan my own solo adventures, having others attend to the myriad details was a luxury. Communication was thorough and frequent. On the rare occasion that I had a question it was addressed immediately. Well done.

We loved the small size ship and the ability to meet so many like-minded passengers and get to know the guides, photographers and staff on outings and during meals. The ability to have a flexible plan according to weather and wildlife was a bonus, as many times we followed whales and stopped for humpback breeching off the bow or orca whales diving all around us. Just about the only other ships we saw while cruising were fishing boats and a sister ship, certainly none of the big cruise ships because they couldn't go where we went. The excursions via Zodiac, kayak, paddleboard, plus hikes for all levels were a blast. We had curious sea lion calves swimming around our Zodiac and observed harbor seals lounging on large pieces of ice near the glacier.

Small boat, small group. Go where the "Love Boats" can't. Excellent food and all shore excursions are part of your paid-for trip. Excellent service from Alaskan Dream Cruises. Not only did the cruise director and naturalist keep the passengers busy and interested, but Captain Eric Morrow got more involved with the passengers and day-to-day operation of the cruise itinerary than any other boat captain we've encountered on many small boat excursions.

We signed up for the trip as a family experience, and the grandchildren said it was the very best vacation ever!! There were 15 kids under 12 and the ship's staff created special programs for them (Global Explorers). They all got to know each other and really had a wonderful time. The ages ran from 6 to 12 and they all got a lot out of it. Watching them have such fun was the best part of the trip for us.

The most exciting experience for us was watching the humpback whales bubble net feed three times in succession. We saw orcas, sea otters, seals, a bear at a distance and two mountain goats.

The naturalist guides were terrific. They bubbled with enthusiasm and were great fun to be with. The explanations on the ground were very clear as were the evening recaps of the days' activities. We especially loved Chelsea whom our granddaughter and her friends invited to sit with them for two dinners at a special girls' table.

Flight over Glacier Bay—who knew that glaciers looked so huge and sliced? Following that, a walk through Haines, talking wth residents, gave us a sense of how that small distant place could be home. Our leisurely nature walk in the Inian Islands filled our senses with the beauty and the plenty of forests there. As an elderly participant, I never lacked activities, or an extra arm over tough spots. Ian Phillipsen even added an afternoon Zodiac cruise on our final day.

The most memorable parts were bear viewing at Silver Salmon Creek Lodge, flight seeing over Denali, the vastness, solitude, wilderness and beauty of Denali National Park, the unspoiled nature of the Inside Passage, and skipping all the touristy ports that the larger ships stop at. The guides and naturalists at all 3 of our destinations were top notch. They knew the area, the wildlife, they were concerned for the safety of their guests as well as the wildlife. Everyone was concerned with preserving the wilderness and the wildlife for future generations.

Our 6th trip to Southeast Alaska and each one was different. The most memorable part was being able to share the magnificent scenery and magical wildlife encounters with our family. We sighted 9 bears on our Glacier Bay day and had 7 different Orca encounters, including a couple where they swam right under the ship. Zodiac tours through ice choked fjords and forest walks among incredibly green moss draped trees, combined with exploration of the inter tidal zones allowed us to have a totally immersive experience of everything that is so special about Southeast Alaska. As I mentioned this was our 6th trip, and yet we were able to visit 3 areas that we had not had the opportunity to visit before.

The staff from the Captain to the stewards were very friendly and incredibly attentive. The naturalist staff was fantastic with a broad set of expertise that was enthusiastically shared with the guests. The expedition leader, Stephanie Martin, was amazing! Her knowledge and experience opened us to new destinations and the off ship activities were diverse and timed perfectly.

Some fantastic experiences involving bear, birds and marine mammals (especially the bear on the last night while out walking on shore. Very memorable. Exciting but safe!). Being on the water in the zodiacs watching the glaciers calving—the water amplifies the experience dramatically. Hearing it, feeling the wave from the impact, hearing the popping of thousands of year old air escaping the ice. Really enjoyed being alongside the naturalists on excursions. Lovely people with great knowledge and a great, casual way of conferring information.

Jessica was great. She held that last deluxe suite for us as we made our final decision and even sent us options for other trips if the initial one we were interested in didn't work out. Even though Jessica said how amazing the trip would be, it still exceeded our expectations. Wildlife viewing was incredible and we had several opportunities to take out kayaks and DIB (Zodiac type water craft) for even closer viewing of wildlife and glaciers. We had one day of rain then clear or partly cloudy skies the rest of the tour, which is very rare for Alaska so we got a bonus. They even woke us up after midnight one evening as you could see the northern lights! We saw humpback whales bubble feeding, a killer whale pod, sea lions, otters, bears, mountain goats/sheep (?), eagles and so much more.

We really appreciated the very personal and professional way that ExpeditionTrips answered all of our questions and the reassurance that yes we CAN go kayaking! Glaciers, whales and Glacier Bay Nat'l Park – the feeling of our group being alone in the vast wilderness of Alaska – no news, internet, cars, cities...just us! Activities for all interests and levels of ability. Because of the small number of passengers, it was easy to meet and get to know people from all over the world.

Since our ship was small enough to travel places where big ships can't go, we were often the only ship in sight. It felt like we were the only people in this wilderness, kayaking around islands, sailing a skiff inside a little bay filled with fishing bald eagles and a grizzly, looking for harbor seals on the ice and mountain goats on the cliffs. For two days, we seemed to be in the center of a congregation of more than a hundred humpbacks. They were busy feeding, sometimes very, very close to us as we stood on the deck of the ship. But what I will remember most is not necessarily the breaching, lunging and bubble netting, but the heavy but calm sound of their breathing all around me. I will take that sound with me forever.

It was amazing how every single one of the staff was eager to go out of their way to respond to our every want or need. Each one seemed to be extremely happy, and that contentment was reflected in their care for all of us. All of them, especially the expedition staff, knew an amazing amount about Alaska geology, plants and animals, and on this trip we were lucky enough to have a naturalist professor on board, who gave nightly presentations, went along on the skiff trips, and was always there to answer questions.

Our trip to Alaska was simply unbelievable. People use terms like the trip of a lifetime casually, but this truly was such a trip. There simply aren’t enough superlatives to dole out to each of the crew. They were, quite simply, remarkable. I was particularly struck by how truly happy they seemed. This may sound silly, but in the hustle and bustle of Silicon Valley, I see lots of successful people, but it is rare to see people who are truly so happy. It gave me a lot to think about. I have been recommending the experience like crazy; I can’t think of anything possible that could have been done to make the trip more wonderful for us.

There are few places we go for vacation that the whole family wants to do a second time. This is one of those experiences.

The food on our un-cruise was amazing! The chefs and crew were so accomodating to my gluten free needs. We loved eating the healthy meals that tasted sooo good. Thanks to everyone on the WEX!

The fabulous ride via raft down the Kenai River to Skilak Lake was a beautiful introduction to the Kenai Peninsula. Stephanie created the most delicious meals - the best on the entire trip!

We were on the Wilderness Adventurer before, and loved it. We were prepared for cold and rain, and got sunny and warm. Everyone on the ship was fabulous. Crew and guests became like a group of old friends. Service was excellent. Most memorable parts were a long point-to-point kayak, the Chief Shakes rededication, and seeing bears from the kayak—the whole thing, actually.

We want to express our heart-felt appreciation to the Endeavour crew and staff for making our recent cruise the vacation of a lifetime. There were plenty of highlights: the wildlife viewing, the stunning scenery, the outings ashore and kayaking – the great weather, even! But what really made it truly special were the enthusiasm, genuine warmth, and caring attitude of the entire crew.

Joy did a very good job understanding our preferences and concerns. She had worked with us on our Antarctica cruise. The ship, itinerary, and cabin we ended up choosing was exactly the right one - she did a great job helping to make sure our expectations were properly set.

I wanted to see Alaska and the combination of "luxury" and "adventure" sounded perfect. The staff, scenery and service were outstanding. They crew were all wonderful...the massage therapists, the bartender, the guides, the captain, everyone was not only willing, but anxious to be helpful.

This trip was to celebrate my 60th birthday and the entire two weeks was memorable: skiff tours to the front of South Sawyer Glacier in Tracy Arm, watching the bears at Margaret River, the captain's grilled oysters on the deck. Expedition Trips has been great to work with.  As I wrote, we booked through you for the Antarctic Cruise in January and would certainly book with you again in the future.

The experience working with first Joy, then Jennifer, was fantastic. They excelled with their positive attitudes, along with creativity. They were very organized, booking everything quickly, and returned my calls immediately. I will definitely book future trips with you. The most memorable parts of the trip were the whales bubble netting and breaching!

My experience with ExpeditionTrips was excellent! I took this trip two years ago with another of my grandsons. I had a wonderful trip at that time. When the opportunity to take another trip with a grandson, I told him about visiting Alaska. He read the information about the trip and made the decision that it would be the trip for him. He told me yesterday that the whales were the best part of the trip.

The staff were wonderful with my grandson. They provided special meals for him and special events. They helped me with activities as well as his camera. The naturalist on the trip included him in discussions on the hikes by asking him questions he was able to answer.

ExpeditionTrips made the trip very positive! I was admittedly naive about what to expect. We had never been on a cruise but felt the expedition model would be appropriate for us. All aspects of the trip were excellent! The staff onboard was accommodating and helpful. The crew was efficient and confident.

The information we received from ExpeditionTrips was extremely helpful. We always felt that our needs were taken care of personally, even though we were part of a group of 14. Our guide, Eric Rock, was fabulous. He was a whirlwind of activity working to make everyone's experience special. He was so willing to share his knowledge and love for Alaska.

Everything met or exceeded my expectations on our cruise to Alaska. The weather cooperated -- sunny and warm right up until the last full day on the ship. Several guests even went swimming in Lake Eva at the end of one of our hikes. A picnic lunch was served on the top deck the afternoon we were in Glacier Bay. Gwen and I even got sunburned!

Our experience working with ExpeditionTrips was very helpful for this trip. Our Program Manager's detailed knowledge of the different small boat cruises was a very big help. She was happy to spend time answering our long list of questions. We narrowed it down to two cruise lines. In the end, it couldn't have been a better fit for what we were looking for.

My experience with ExpeditionTrips was very positive. You called me by telephone when I inquired about the trip and all documents were sent as promised. You quickly fixed an issue with the bed arrangement too, I appreciate that very much. The trip met all of our expectations. We really wanted to see remote Alaska and this was the best way we could find. The crew was absolutely excellent. I really liked the way the crew and staff remembered and called us by our names - that really made us feel welcome. Also, we really were treated as if we were at home.
