Our Take: Ecoventura

Luxury 20-person sister ships Origin and Theory offer an intimate adventure. The most favorable passenger-to-guide ratio in the Galápagos will appeal to the life-long learner, plus those who appreciate creature comforts will enjoy the upscale accommodations and dining courtesy of the only Relais and Chateaux-approved cruise operator in the archipelago.

What we Love

We love the attention to detail poured into each vessel. With design elements evoking the flora and fauna of the region and panoramic windows offering uninterrupted views of the real thing, the interiors have a modern organic aesthetic.

Ecoventura began running tours in the Galápagos in 1991 and have since spared no expense upgrading its fleet. They have raised the bar on comfort and amenities while simlultaneously reducing their environmental impact.

Custom built for exploration in the Galápagos Islands, both yachts feature design techniques to provide a smooth voyage and maximize fuel efficiency. These include an innovative curved bow to cut through waves, an underwater bulbous keel which reduces friction, and technology to minimize water pollution and conserve water.

In addition to being Ecuador’s first carbon-neutral company and the first in the Galápagos to convert a vessel to hybrid energy, Ecoventura is committed to supporting the Charles Darwin Foundation and has received the foundation's coveted Platinum Supporter status, the highest level attainable.

The Trip Experience

With regularly-scheduled 8-day itineraries on offer, travelers seeking total privacy while exploring the islands can charter their own private yacht for an exclusive experience shared with family and friends. We recommend chartering a yacht at a time when cruising on a larger ship could be a challenge.

The layout of both the Origin and Theory are uniquely suited to a charter, and you will appreciate the convenience having all 10 cabins located on the same deck. Two cabins have a pulldown bed for a third guest, and two connecting cabins can be converted into a two-bedroom suite, making both yachts an ideal choice for families traveling with young children.

A defining feature of the experience onboard both the Origin and Theory is the connection with a country’s culture that only fine dining can evoke. Unique culinary experiences are presented daily by a highly-trained team of Ecuadorian chefs, with elevated offerings inspired by Relais & Chateaux and a generous open bar policy.

Drawn from across the Galápagos and Ecuador, the guides and naturalists share their unique perspective and deep knowledge of the region with their guests. For activities such as panga cruises, glass bottom boat excursions, snorkeling, and guided walks, a maximum of 8 guests, 1 crew member, and 1 naturalist guide are allowed per panga, making for a personalized learning experience.

Health and Safety highlights

Health and safety protocols are explained during the welcome briefing, which details biosafety measures to be followed throughout the journey. The briefings will be held at the main lounge and dining room to encourage social distancing and they will be kept short and precise. Instructions for activities will be also be placed in a glass frame in the main lounge.

Hand-sanitizing stations are placed throughout the ship’s social areas, while guests are also supplied with a personal alcohol-based gel bottle. In addition to increased deep-cleaning, Ecoventura will be disinfecting with ozone machines (HEPA filters) in common areas, public spaces, and guests’ cabins with an emphasis on high-contact surfaces around coffee stations, dining and bar surfaces, social area restrooms, jacuzzi, and sun deck areas.

All crew members residing in the Galápagos Islands are tested before boarding, while those arriving from the mainland must pass all the controls and procedures established by the local Galápagos airports. All crew members will be required to wear the appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) based on their roles and responsibilities. Crew have received detailed training on Ecoventura’s sanitation protocols, in addition to learning how to identify flu or virus-like symptoms.
