Discovering the Antarctic Peninsula
Luxury Expedition Ship
Hebridean Sky (2017/2018)
Stunning scenery, adorable penguins, and powerful landscapes are what you will find when you visit Antarctica. As a world traveler whose adventures have primarily focused on wildlife viewing and majestic scenery, Antarctica was unbelievable and truly unmatched. Each landing site will blow you away and leave you wondering how this could be as incredible as the last site you visited!
While crossing the Drake Passage en route to the White Continent, we saw over eight species of seabirds in a fifteen minute window as well sperm whales, a rare sighting. Once we arrived in the South Shetland Islands, off the coast of Antarctica, we saw Adelie, Gentoo, and Chinstrap penguins on our first landing!
As with any adventure to this amazing place, weather and wildlife dictated our journey. We encountered seals relaxing on the sea ice and cruised through Iceberg Alley where we saw huge tabular icebergs. We were even able to visit a huge Chinstrap penguin colony on Devil Island in the Weddell Sea, which is normally closed off by the ice.
The shapes and blueish colors of the icebergs were amazing to see close up while cruising in the Zodiacs as we listened for chunks of ice calving off the towering glaciers.
We continued our journey south along the Antarctic Peninsula and spotted a family of humpback whales swimming right next to our kayaks. We even came across an emperor penguin preening itself on the sea ice!
This truly is an incredible frozen continent!
