A Wedding in Antarctica!
When I hear “destination wedding,” the first image that comes to mind is a sunny, tropical beach, with a barefoot couple saying “I do” in the warm breeze. Romantic? Absolutely. Unique? Depends on who you ask. For newlyweds Janet Hsieh and George Young, their adventurous spirits led them to the end of the earth and an unlikely wedding location. Unfazed by the threat of cold feet, these two ventured to Antarctica to proclaim their love for one another, surrounded by spectacular natural beauty and amazing wildlife, beginning their married life in the most memorable fashion.
Dressed to the nines in neoprene gown and tuxedo, the bride and groom traded in the limousine and cruised to shore in Zodiac boats. Due to the unpredictable weather in Antarctica, the exact date and location of the ceremony was decided just hours before—and the day couldn’t have been more perfect. The air was crisp, and the sun peeked from behind the clouds above the calm bay of Neko Harbour. The stunning backdrop—a massive, grandiose glacier—reflected in the placid glassy waters.
The guest list included close family and friends as well as a few penguins, dressed for the occasion and naturally adorned in their finest black tie attire. It was magical, and there wasn’t a dry eye as Janet walked down the snowy aisle. Following the ceremony a celebration commenced aboard the Akademik Ioffe, complete with a BBQ feast out on the deck, and an Antarctica-shaped wedding cake.
Although it’s common for us to help groups arrange spectacular adventures around the world, a wedding in Antarctica is one of the most remarkable to date!
Do you have a special occasion you’d like to celebrate in a unique destination... a birthday spent swimming with sea lions in the Galapagos Islands or a family reunion exploring Alaska's spectacular fjords and glaciers?
