Why are Antarctic Cruises Becoming So Popular?
In recent years, Antarctic cruises have gained notoriety. Every tourist season, anywhere from 15 to 25 ships make their way to this art of the world, carrying 60 to 300 passengers. Although Antarctica is primarily ice and snow, there is a five-month period from November to March where Antarctic cruises offer much to see. During that time, there is more than 20 hours of sunlight daily. In November and early December, passengers can watch seabirds and penguins in the mating season and the appearance of wildflowers. Then in Mid-December, the cruises allow people to see the first penguin chicks emerge, fur seal breeding, and seal pups moving about. By February, there are tons of whales to see, penguins beginning to fledge, and receding ice packs, which provide opportunity for cruise ships to venture even further to the south.
