Machu Picchu-An Ancient Mystery

The ancient ruins of Machu Picchu remained hidden from the modern world until they were finally discovered in 1911 by a Yale archeologist. Today the exact purpose Machu Picchu originally served remains largely unknown; however, the mystery surrounding Machu Picchu continues to drive thousands of visitors to the ancient site each year.

There have been a number of theories surrounding the purpose of Machu Picchu over the past years. One theory suggests that Machu Picchu was once a boarding school for the children of the people who were conquered by the Incas. Others believe that Machu Picchu served as a type of resort for wealthy ancient Egyptians. Regardless of the original purpose of Machu Picchu, there is no doubt that it is one of the most popular destinations in South America today.

It has been estimated that nearly 2,000 people per day come to visit the ancient grounds that rise high above the clouds.

The best way to visit Machu Picchu is through a tour guide. Visitors can certainly travel around the area without a guide; however, a tour and expedition company can help reduce the effort it might take on your own to arrange matters such as lodging and transportation.

Usually a tour will involve a visit to the Sacred Valley as well as to Machu Picchu. The short tour may be three days long, but if you want to see everything, you should plan on an extended tour lasting five or more days. Many expedition companies also specialize in other matters such as rafting excursions and even llama-assisted trips.

When booking a tour to Machu Picchu make sure you check with the company to be sure exactly what is offered in your expedition before actually booking the trip.
