Galapagos Islands: New Itinerary Options

Amelia Tockston & Leslie Holgate

Traditionally, Galapagos ships have operated on a weekly route that encompassed the same landings every eight days. However, due to increased conservation efforts, the Galapagos National Park has mandated new itinerary guidelines, effective 2012. The new changes will expand itineraries to 15 days, requiring that a landing not be visited more than once by a ship in a two-week period. The result will be a greater variety of itinerary options and trip lengths to choose from.

There are several short itinerary options that can be combined within these 15-day itineraries. Changes vary by ship, and itinerary options range from 4 to 15 days. We also recommend two pre-cruise nights and one post-cruise night to allow time for traveling to and from Ecuador.

The trips on our website are categorized by regions visited and number of days. As there are many different options, our Galapagos experts are here to help you compare and contrast the programs to find the trip that best meets your interests and needs.

We recommend spending eight days exploring the Galapagos Islands, but if you have time constraints, shorter programs offer a wonderful experience as well. Here are a few of our favorite trips:

Southwestern - La Pinta – 8 Days
Comfortable, bright and modern ship with connecting cabins, great guides, kayaks, glass-bottom boat, and Jacuzzi.

National Geographic Endeavour – 8 Days
96-passenger expedition ship with excellent naturalist guides and educational program, kayaks, and glass-bottom boat.

Northwestern - Eric – 8 Days
Sleek motor yacht with good naturalist guides and diving option; perfect for those who want a smaller ship!

Southwestern - Explorer II – 7 Days
This ship is perfect for those who want to travel on an upscale ship with a lighter natural history program. Families enjoy this ship.

Northern - Evolution – 8 Days
Spacious 32-passenger vessel with the feel of the 1920s; good guides, kayaks, and a quality itinerary.
