Legendary Icebreaker Returns to the Arctic
ExpeditionTrips asked Bill Davis, Executive Operations Manager of Quark Expeditions, for insight into their exciting new Arctic 2016 expeditions aboard the legendary Russian icebreaker Kapitan Khlebnikov. If you are passionate for all things polar, embrace the unexpected, and enjoy experiences that few others undertake, an epic Arctic adventure—or circumnavigation—may be in your future!
Imagine exploring the Far North aboard one of the world’s most powerful icebreakers, experiencing the thrill of the ice being crushed beneath your mighty ship’s bow, and being whisked away by helicopter to locations more stunning than you ever imagined! Accompanied by leading experts—including polar bear researchers, marine biologists, and polar historians—travel aboard the only Russian icebreaker operating outside of Russia affords rare access to some of the most remote, untouched places on the planet.
In true pioneering spirit, four voyages have been designed for the Kapitan Khlebnikov’s exploration of less-discovered areas of the Arctic. For the ultimate off-the-beaten-path adventure—from searching for wildlife to visiting remote villages that are preserving traditional ways of life in a modern world—choose one (or more!) of these unique itineraries:
Northeast Passage – departs 7/10/2016
Extreme Greenland – departs 8/4/2016
Greenland & Canadian Arctic – departs 8/22/2016
Northwest Passage – departs 9/6/2016
All are sure to be fascinating, but we think the Extreme Greenland voyage is especially compelling. Using ice and satellite charts, Canadian Ice services, and onboard helicopters, the Kapitan Khlebnikov will attempt a historic crossing of the Lincoln Channel from Cape Jesus Morris. If conditions do not allow passage, travelers will be treated to an equally stunning exploration of Greenland’s rarely-visited eastern coast. Greenland is a hiker’s paradise and home to some of the planet’s most impressive ice, so this trip is sure to be a success either way!
While it’s no surprise that such epic trips take a remarkable amount of planning, you might be amazed to learn it takes roughly two years to create these complex itineraries. Aspects such as diplomatic permits for visiting local villages, helicopter logistics, planning diverse landing sites to optimize cultural, wildlife, and historic experiences all take careful consideration. As a hardworking icebreaker, the Kapitan Khlebnikov must be chartered from the Russian government—something Quark has been doing for almost 10 years. Top that off with assembling an all-star expedition team with top qualifications to give guests an unparalleled experience, and you have a significant undertaking!
