Summary : Explore the islands and inlets of British Columbia on this adventure from Ketchikan, Alaska to Friday Harbor, Washington. British Columbia’s coastal temperate rainforests are characterized by some of the oldest and largest trees on Earth, which may support the highest fungal and lichen diversity of any forest system. This area is also home to the "great bears" of coastal BC, some of which can weigh over a thousand pounds! The bears include the brown or grizzly bear, the black bear and the genetically-unique subspecies of the black bear, the Kermode bear. A recessive genetic trait gives this small percentage of the black bears a white or cream colored coat. These white bears are known as spirit bears and have enriched the native mythology in the area.
Activities : Birding, Hiking, Kayaking
$3,850 to $4,400
After boarding, get underway after a brief orientation and review of boat safety procedures. Leaving Ketchikan behind, head south down Revillagigedo Channel to Foggy Bay, located along the western edge of Misty Fjords National Monument & Wilderness.
Visit interesting fjords and bays of the Inside Passage. Take time to explore narrow, ice sculpted canyons lined with waterfalls. In the river delta at the inlet’s head, watch for brown bears feeding on sedges. This is the homeland of rare “Spirit Bears”, a genetic mutation in the black bears of this region causes about 10% of them to be born with white fur. They can be difficult to see from the water, but sharp eyes may be rewarded! If time, stop and hike with a bear guide and visit an old cannery along the way.
Make an open-ocean crossing through Queen Charlotte Sound keeping an eye out for wildlife.
Navigate through three major rapids, Transit Whirlpool Point, Dent and Greene Point Rapids, utilizing to-the-minute timing. Travel south through the Copeland Islands and down into Desolation Sound, with anchorage perhaps at Squirrel Cove. Hop in a kayak and take a relaxed paddle around its protected cove featuring a lagoon with a reversing tidal rapid – great fun in the warm waters of summer!
Cross the Gulf of Georgia into the sheltered waters of Vancouver Island’s Gulf Islands with a potential stop at Nanaimo. Celebrate the last night at the Captain’s Ball swapping adventure.
Continue through the Gulf to the San Juan Islands and go through customs in Friday Harbor. Disembark in time to make the evening ferry to the mainland.
While this is a planned itinerary, each trip differs slightly depending upon the time of the tidal currents, the weather conditions, wildlife viewing opportunities, and the wishes of the passengers.
